FAQ’s

WHAT IS A PANIC ATTACK?

Put simply a panic attack can be described as an emotional nightmare.  It is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort which is so powerful that it tricks you into fearing that you are dying, going crazy, about to faint, or lose control of yourself in some vital way.  In fact these symptoms convince you that you are in terrible danger.  Some sufferers believe they are having a heart attack and are going to die.

CAN DIET AFFECT PANIC, ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION?

As all of these are associated with energy loss, a healthy diet is important.  Avoid junk foods and carbohydrates.  These foods temporarily make you feel good but they do not help your recovery.  Minimise coffee and other stimulants, and maximise fruit, vegetables, poultry and fish intake.  A check for iron deficiency is also helpful as a deficiency can lead to fatigue and exacerbate these problems.

IS HYPNOTHERAPY SAFE TO TREAT PANIC ATTACKS?

Because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, the person  is always in control, just as someone who is daydreaming can decide to go on or stop at any time. Therefore you could say that panic attacks using hypnotherapy is a safe method of treatment provided you are under the guidance of a skilled practitioner with whom a trusting relationship has been established.

CAN ACUPUNCTURE BE USED TO TREAT ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS?

Because acupuncture has so many positive effects on the body with minimal incidence of side effects, it can be used safely for anxiety and panic attacks.  However, like any alternative treatments look for a practitioner who has thorough knowledge and training and specializes in Traditional Chinese Medicine. CAN PANIC AFFECT OVERALL HEALTH?

Panic attacks are not dangerous, but are especially effective in persuading you to believe that your attack is.  This is what panic does, convinces you that you are at risk.  However, a key ingredient in the recovery process is to learn to respond to panic in ways that calm it down.

ARE HERBAL MEDICATIONS EFFECTIVE FOR PANIC ATTACKS?

Everyone is different.  Some people find them effective, while others don’t.  If you plan to take herbal medication, and you are taking prescribed medication such as an antidepressant or another anti-anxiety drug, you will need to talk with your doctor.  There can be adverse effects if you use both.

Unfortunately because of the many unsubstantiated claims made for some herbal remedies, and because the market is not well regulated, you need to be careful and buy only from reputable sources.  Avoid those who do not list the ingredients and avoid buying herbs that are stored in jars as they probably are worthless as far as quality is concerned because of their exposure to air, light and moisture.
